The history of flight simulation is lengthy and impressive. As soon as the technology was available, airline pilot training began to include simulation as an integral part of the curriculum. It was only a matter of time, then, before computer technology allowed both amateur and professional pilots to engage in gaming experiences that included flight simulation. These initial flight simulations and/or games were animated and, while fun to play, not particularly realistic. The next level of flight simulation came during the past decade, as online gaming became far more realistic and virtual simulations engaged more and more aficionados, both amateur and professional. Entire communities developed using websites specifically designed for virtual flight through a multiplayer server. Now, multiple “pilots” could engage one another, compare simulations, and form a network based upon common interest. Now, flight simulation has arrived at its zenith at http://fsx-atc.com/ . Here, a community of pilots can file flight plans and completely immerse themselves in a flight world, with impressive gameplay elements and amazingly virtual simulations. So realistic are these flights that the FSX multiplayer server even provides virtual ATC, as well as the opportunity for members to obtain authorization to perform as an ATC for flight sessions. Becoming a member of http://fsx-atc.com is easy. One registers with a call sign and agrees to follow the rules for play. Play can be accessed either through Gamespy or by Direct Connect IP 86.146.19.125, and a member simply signs in with his/her call sign and password. Rules on the site are simple and few but strictly enforced. A pilot must have a microphone and remain in contact with the ATC throughout the flight; one can never spawn on the runway; and one must know and remember his/her call sign.The site itself is easily navigated, with links for rules, filing a flight plan, a live map, and the opportunity to join a virtual airline. As a commercial pilot, I have to say that I am pretty discriminating when it comes to online gaming, especially when such gaming involves flight simulation. In fact, I have played such games as “Flying Steel,”“Flightsim,” and “Sim Air Traffic” often. Eventually, however, I become bored – the graphics and the simulations are simply not realistic enough to maintain my interest and enthusiasm. That skepticism, however, was soon dismissed, as I discovered that this multiplayer server has designed the best flight simulation experience available online. I also like the fact that I can connect through Gamespy, and, given my crazy schedule, can “fly” at any time, day or night, and always find others from all over the world to engage.
