Boat fishing trips are great because they allow you to get right where the fish are feeding. Bringing in the catch to camp at night sometimes means that you will have to clean your fish in the dark. If it were possible to fillet your fish right away and put them on ice while you are still in your boat, it would get rid of the need to fumble around in the dark, while preserving the freshness of the fish for longer periods of time. I have tried to clean a fish in a boat, and what a mess it made! I almost lost my fillet knife overboard because of some waves, and the mess got all over my clothes. What I decided to do was build a portable fish cleaning station for boat. This fish cleaning table allows me a hard, flat surface to clean and fillet fish, with drainage into the water to reduce the mess. This is how I accomplished this task. I started with a plastic board that was the length of the width of my boat. I added some legs to raise the counter up. I then raised the edges to contain any fluids. At one end, the edge was bent down, to allow fluids to drain overboard. I also incorporated an anti-bacterial hand cleaner on the opposite edge to keep myself sanitary and clean. Clean up of the fish cleaning table is as easy as blasting it with a hose and some soapy water. Since implementing this system, I have found that filleting fish right after they are caught has increased the freshness of my catch. I am able to throw the fillets directly on ice. When I get back to camp after dark, they are easily prepared for cooking. I recommend implementing a fish cleaning station for boat to your fishing setup to allow you a clean, flat surface for cleaning your fish. Hopefully, these tips will help you to have cleaner fillets for the pan as well. Happy fishing!
