In the past few years, every time a word game became popular, cheats or helpers have come popping up all over. Thus, it is not surprising that when Ruzzle became a word game phenomenon in the first few months of 2013, every type of Ruzzle cheat and solver could now be found online. And because of the availability of these little helpers, more and more players are taking advantage of it when playing against friends and random opponents. The problem then for the more honest players is, how does one find out if your opponent is employing such a tool? Before we list down the possible hints of cheating, it must be made clear that there is no surefire way to find out if your opponent is cheating unless you catch him or her red-handed. So even if you are able to ascertain in your own way that your opponent is using some “help” to win, you cannot accuse him or her of cheating. The only thing you can do is to stop playing with him or her. So, how can you tell if someone may be using a Ruzzle cheat? One of the things you have to watch out for is the words that your opponent is building from the random letters on the board. It is quite easy to form short words in Ruzzle, just like it does in Boggle or Scramble with Friends. It is, however, not that easy to find longer words. A lot of long words in your opponent’s list should ring alarm bells unless you are playing against a Scrabble champion or a MENSA member. Of course, you need to take into account how well you know your opponent. If it’s a random player, you really cannot say for sure if he or she is using a Ruzzle cheat. With friends or acquaintances, however, you will have some knowledge about their capabilities and that can help you deduce if your opponent is cheating you or not. A well-read opponent will more than likely be able to build a lot of long words. One that is not well-versed in vocabulary will most likely not be able to form many long words, if any. Aside from long words, you will also need to be wary of rarely used words popping up on your opponent’s list. If you suddenly see your opponent coming up with words like TOMAN, EMPLANE, and SPAHI, then there’s a big chance that he or she is using a Ruzzle solver. Also, if he or she is able to use the word and letter multipliers (DW, DL, etc.) in most of his or her words, it increases the possibility that your opponent is using such a tool. Lastly, if your opponent only has the highest scoring words on his or her list, then there is a big chance that he or she really is using a Ruzzle cheat. First of all, it would be too much of a coincidence for him or her to only find the words with the largest number of points. Second, he or she must be extremely lucky to find just these specific words in the span of two minutes without noticing any of the low scoring ones. With these little clues, you may have a better than average chance of catching a Ruzzle cheat and avoiding any games with him or her in the future. Or, you could always fight fire with fire. After all, it takes a Ruzzle cheat to defeat one.
