Over the course of their century long history, 9mm bullets have quickly become one of the most popular forms of ammunition used across the world. From self defense to paramilitary usage, 9mm bullets have become the staple of gun users ever since their inception in the year 1902. One of the reasons that the 9mm bullet has become so popular is that it can be used so easily in handguns, most often in pistols. 9mm pistols are used by around two thirds of the police force in America, which lends credence to its status as the world’s most popular bullet. One of the most common questions that people tend to have about the 9MM bullet concerns its penetration. By ascertaining the amount a bullet would penetrate a body, one can determine how to use the bullet. This will help you judge whether a shot you are aiming would end up being fatal or not, something that is quite useful since not every shot is meant to kill its target. One thing that must be noted is that penetration depends a lot on the weight of the bullet. There are three main weight categories for 9mm bullets: 115, 124 and 147 grams. A standard 115 gram 9mm bullet will penetrate up to 9 inches into standard ballistic gel. This is a good indicator of how much it would penetrate your target. The depth of penetration increases in proportion to the size of the bullet. 124 gram 9mm bullets tend to penetrate around 10 to 10.5 inches, whereas 147 gram bullets penetrate at around 12-13 inches. There are other factors to take into account. Lighter bullets penetrate deeper at close range as they are launched at higher speeds whereas heavier bullets gain speed during travel so they penetrate deeper when shot at longer distances. Another thing to keep in mind while using a 9mm pistol is expansion. 9mm bullets are hollow points which means that they expand once they are inside the body in order to cause extra damage. Expansion also depends a fair amount on the weight of the 9mm bullet in question. However, the differences here depend a fair amount on the design of the bullet as well. In most cases, the heavier the bullet is the more it will expand once it has hit the target. However, heavier bullets have a disadvantage of being slower in the air than lighter bullets, which means that they have a lower accuracy rate than lighter bullets. All in all, there are many options for your ammunition while using a 9mm handgun. It all depends on what use you might have for your 9mm pistol. If you prefer accuracy and only want to mildly incapacitate your target, go for the lighter bullets. However, if you are looking to cause more damage and don’t expect to require all that much accuracy, then the heavier bullets should serve you well. The 9mm has proven to be a solid performer and has been used by the US Military for over 25 years as the primary side arm caliber. While there are many arguments, pros and cons it continues to be the most common caliber of our generation.
