Movies are a great escape. You can immerse yourself in another world for a couple of hours while you destress and just enjoy a great story. Some of the best films to watch are those that make you laugh. Here are five great comedies that you can watch over and over to have a good time. Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993) You almost can’t go wrong with a Mel Brooks movie if you’re looking for fun. Men in Tights is a parody of the Robin Hood legend. Cary Elwes stars as Robin of Loxley, but it’s the supporting cast that provide many of the laughs. Dick Van Patten speaks perfect Pig Latin for the wedding ceremony between Sheriff of Rottingham and Maid Marion. Mel Brooks plays a Jewish Rabbi. Men in Tights may not have the critical acclaim of “Blazing Saddles” or “Young Frankenstein” but it still has some wonderful moments that will make you laugh. The Merry Men Singers performing the title song, "Men in Tights" is one of the best moments in the movie. |
Caddyshack (1980) RollingStone readers voted this movie number six on the “25 Funniest Movies of All Time” list. Harold Ramis is another director that has a knack for comedy. Rodney Dangerfield, Bill Murray and Chevy Chase, stand up comedians in their own right, starred in this film about golf snobs versus slobs. It’s considered one of the greatest sports movies as well as being named number two on Bravo’s 100 funniest movies. Just don’t expect the sequel “Caddyshack II” to live up to the first one.
Shrek (2001) Winning the first Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, Shrek established DreamWorks Animation as a filmmaker on the level of Pixar. This film parodies Disney fairy tale movies. It’s appropriate for kids, but there’s enough humor in it for adults. The music is wonderful. The animation is delightful. The movie ranked #3 on Bravo’s 100 funniest films list. It’s a can’t-miss film to watch.
Best in Show (2000) A funny film about dog shows directed by Christopher Guest, who you probably know better as Count Rugen, the six-fingered man from “The Princess Bride.” This “mockumentary” has a list of great comedians such as Jennifer Coolidge, Michael McKean, Jane Lynch and Eugene Levy. Plus, there’s plenty of dogs, all of whom are champions in their own right. It’s improv comedy at its best in film. You can’t help but smile and laugh. And it might inspire you to teach your dog some new tricks.
A League of Their Own (1992) This movie about girl’s baseball during World War II probably doesn’t come to mind when talking about funny movies. It’s a movie that has cultural significance for remembering the real “All-American Girls Professional Baseball League.” But it does have some wonderfully funny moments. “There’s no crying in baseball.” The cast, Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Madonna and Lori Petty make the movie charming and delightful. Director Penny Marshall was the perfect person to bring baseball, comedy and feminism together. The women of the AAGPBL celebrated the film that remembered their contribution to the War.
