If you have been thinking about using recessed lights to light one or more of the rooms in your home, you may be wondering how to go about laying out the recessed lights in the most effective way possible. If you make a plan, decide on a focal point, use proper spacing and avoid leaving shadows, you will be well on your way to a beautifully lighted room. As you begin making your plan for installing recessed lights, you will want to begin by creating a sketch of the layout of the room. You know that it is not effective to just put recessed lights in randomly, and drawing the room to scale will be a huge help. You should also measure the furniture that you intend to place in the room, and cut out paper shapes that are the correct corresponding sizes. Once you have the layout organized, you will be able to determine where the light from your recessed lights will fall. Depending on the room you are installing the recessed lights in; you will have specific spots where you know you want light shining directly down. For instance, if you have a special piece of art, you know you will want it highlighted by the recessed lights. If you have a particular spot where you like to sit and do handwork or read, you could begin by placing the first light directly above it and spacing out the rest of the lights from that point. If you do not want to create a specific focal point in the room with your recessed lights, you will want to determine whether the room is small enough to simply place the recessed lights around the perimeter for optimum lighting or if you want to begin in the center and work outward with your recessed lights. One general method to figure out how far apart to locate your recessed lights is to divide the ceiling height in half. For instance, if your room's ceiling is the standard 8 foot ceiling, you will want to place your recessed lights approximately 4 feet apart. Another school of thought suggests that you use the inch to foot method. In other words, if the diameter of the recessed lights is 3 inches, you should space them three feet apart, and if the diameter is 6 inches, the spacing should be 6 feet between fixtures. With either of these methods, you will want to take a few other things into consideration as you set your plan. Depending on the bright or dark d?cor of the room and whether the recessed lights will be used for highlighting or for general lighting, you will want to vary this formula. One strategy would be to place the recessed lights closer together than you might, and then use recessed lights that can be dimmed and adjust the brightness as needed. Keep the recessed lights about 3 feet from the wall and work to avoid shadows in the corners. By following these tips, you will be able to lay out a beautifully lighted room.
