Before you start installing trace heating tape on your pipes, it is best to check the pipes over for any leaks. It is not advised to install trace heating tape over any leaking pipes as this could damage the insulation and short circuit the tape so make sure you go over the pipes thoroughly when checking for any leaks. Once you are satisfied that no leaks are present, or after you have repaired any leaks, it’s time to attach the trace heating tape to the pipe. For this, it is recommended that you use trace heating tape controlled automatically rather than a non automatic tape as plastic pipes could be damaged by it. Also, choose one that is heavily insulated with rubber. Using the product guidelines, attach the heat tape with electrical tape by wrapping around the pipe, being sure to space it out. It is essential that the trace heating tape does not wrap over itself as this could prove dangerous and be at risk of fire. Instructions Step 1: Attach the trace heating tape to the pipe Only use automatic trace heating tape on your pipes, with heavy rubber insulation around the wires. Start with the plug end next to the outlet, and run the heating tape the entire length of the pipe. Methods for attaching trace heating tape to the pipe vary so make sure you follow the manufacturer's instructions. Step 2: Insulate the pipe After you have applied the trace heating tape to your pipes, insulate the pipe with insulation or special pipe jacketing. If your pipe’s insulation doesn’t protect against water infiltration, make sure you add this waterproofing with a wrap. Step 3: Plug it in Make sure you activate the trace heating tape on your pipe before the winter months to ensure protection from freezing temperatures. Also make sure the trace heating tape is connected directly into a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI). You should find a GFCI protected outlet underneath your home, near the water inlet. If not, you will need to install one. For more information on electric trace heating or to purchase trace heating products, such as trace heating tapes and pads, visit ESH Ltd.
