Installing window molding is not a task that requires high-level carpentry skills. As such, you can do the job on your own. Illustrated herein, is a step-by-step guide on how to install a window molding. Tools & Materials The following are some of the tools and materials you will require to accomplish the job: Tape measure, block pane, safety glasses, wood adhesive, sanding block, power miter saw, nail set, combination square, saber saw, casing and stool molding, sandpaper, wood putty, table saw, 4D and 6D finishing nails and hammer. Caution Put on safety glasses in order to safeguard your eyes from wood chippings and other materials. You should also wear protective gloves when working with power tools. Instructions #1: Gauge the Jamb Normally, a window frame is supposed to be narrow compared to the breadth of the wall. Therefore, the jambs (i.e. frame components surrounding the adjustable sash) have to be protracted. This is to ensure that the jambs are flush with the inner wall. The measurements should be made from the frame towards the wall at different points. #2: Fix Jamb Expansions Tear lengths of roughly 1x knot-free wood, for example, pine. The thickness should be the same as the measurements that were taken above. The strips ought to be cut according to the desired lengths. Thereafter, take the strips and secure them against the jamb using wood adhesive as well as 4D finishing nails. Once the nails have been set, utilize a block plane to get rid of excess wood as is required. This will ensure that the expansion jamb is level with the wall surface. #3: Install the Sill Nick the corners of the sill (i.e. stool). This will enable the piece in-between the jamb rests against the sealed garter. Begin by cutting a rough strip of sill. Clutch the sill in position, balanced on the window. Thereafter, indicate the interior measurements of the window jamb on the sill. Once you are through, seal the garter. Take measurements, starting at the sash towards the rim of the sill at every end. This will enable you to establish the extent of every cut. Apply a blend of square to indicate the cuts. Use a handsaw to cut the marked points. The casing will act as a cover for majorities of the distance in-between the wall and sill. Nonetheless, the sill ought to fit properly against at both ends of the wall. #5: Sill Installation Pin the sill inside the window sill. Use 6D finish nails for this purpose. Ensure that the nails have been evenly spaced. A good rule of the thumb is to insert the nails deep into the sill so as to secure the molding firmly in position. This ensures that any other piece can be detached with relative ease without affecting the molding. #6: Head Casing Installation Use an inside miter to chop a piece of the casing at both ends. To ensure a good reveal, ensure that the space in-between the 2 curt points are equal. A power saw can be used for this process.
