It may appear like the manufacturers of metal roofing materials decided to borrow a leaf from the manufacturers of vinyl flooring; what they started with as a basic ‘plain Jane’ which was most likely steel or aluminum has slowly evolved to being materials that can be made to resemble stone, wood or clay. There are even metal roofing shingles these days that are available in slate, shake and tile styles that have created a real buzz in the metal roofing industry. Forget about the olden days when metal roofing presented the picture of corrugated panels that only looked good for barns or sheds and other standing seam applications that were only fit for commercial applications. These days you will come across metal roofing products that are available for every type of architectural styles whether you are thinking about an ancient Victorian style, Southern Carolina or some Spanish colonial style. There are specific residential metal roofing materials that are almost always made from copper, aluminum or steel. There are rolls of between 24 and 26 gauge made from steel that has been given a metallic coat that protects them from rust and corrosion with a baked-on paint finish. Aluminum metal roofing sheets don’t really require any metallic coating but the will need to get painted. Copper, on the other hand, is often referred to as a natural metal product because it doesn’t need to be painted or coated since it weathers all long without being subject to corrosion; it may also be used for some special features such as the roof of prominent bay windows. Modern metal roofing products can easily be stamped into various shapes and they are almost always installed as interlocking panels whose fasteners are hidden from sight. When someone views them from a distance, they can see a fairly convincing rendition of tiles and shingles. There are other stone coated metal roofing products that are given an acrylic coating with some embedded stone granules that give them a less metallic look. There are standing seam metal roofs that look like just what they are; long painted steel sheets with vertical seams. You want to discuss this option carefully with your metal roofing contractor so that you get a matching design if you choose to go this direction. The greatest benefit associated with metal roofing is longevity; most manufacturers give their products a minimum 50-year warranty of not a lifetime non-prorated warranty; this means that the best quality product will easily last between two and four times longer than your typical asphalt shingles. When you are able to avoid one or two re-roofing jobs during the lifetime of a metal roof, you can be sure that you will have more than offset the initial cost that may have looked slightly higher at the beginning. We also offer commercial roof coating services.
