Homeowners might have experienced how residential plumbing issues always seem to come up all of a sudden and most of them can be classified as emergencies. Though it may seem that residential plumbing jobs crop up out of the blue, the fact of the matter is that we tend to ignore that leaky pipe or faucet or shower drain that does not empty out as fast as it should. And you might have trouble judging whether you should tackle a residential plumbing task yourself or call in a professional plumber. The important thing is to understand what the basics of plumbing are. This will help you save money and time. The pipelines: The primary purpose of residential plumbing is to provide water supply into a home and take away the waste via a drainage system. A maze of pipes supplies water to various parts of the house. The showers and sinks all have water supply and most of the newer homes also have shut-off valves for individual bathroom and kitchen fixtures. Every home has main shut-off valve. Materials such as PVC, copper and PEX are used to make these pipes. In earlier times copper was more commonly used. The materials: The drainage system that leads out of the kitchens and bathrooms is independent of each other though they all finally lead to one common sewer mainline pipe outside your home. The drains are what keep the house toxin and gas-free. ABS or PVC pipes are common in newer homes while cast iron ones were used in older ones. In some cases, the drain pipes inside the house will be made of PVC while the ones that are outside the house are still made of cast iron. This is because they are stronger and do not shake as much as PVC ones do. The main section: The main part of the waste water system is the trap and vent. It is a curved piece of pipe that is under the bathroom or kitchen sink. It keeps a small amount of water in the drain pipe at all times. This prevents any toxic gases from backing-up through the line. The vent line is another critical safety feature of any residential plumbing system. It carries sewer gases right out of your home via a pie that leads to the roof. In rural areas where municipal sewer lines do not connect up to every house, a drain field will have to be installed. This is also called a leech field and the sewage from the house is directed there. A good residential plumbing company will be able to attend to any issues that arise in the water supply or drainage system; whether this is general plumbing or drain cleaning issues.
