People cook various dishes, invite their families at dinner, send cards for Thanksgiving and surprise their children with presents. But right after this celebration, it comes another important day for the end of the autumn: Black Friday. The constant hustle in every city around this day is very hard to compare with any other period of year. Basically, there is an explosion of information about sales and deals that are going to take place the Friday after Thanksgiving. Beside a great impact on both sellers and customers, this day has also a history behind. According to various sources, the term Black Friday was used from the very beginning to describe the shopping day after Thanksgiving that took place on November. One of the most recent sources can be localized in year 1975. The term was used in the New York Times newspaper and it announced some huge sales in many stores. The Black Friday was named this way as the people were so eager for deals that they would “attack” the shopping centres, creating traffic accidents on streets and unfortunate altercations in crowds. Back in 1966, the Philadelphia Police Department used the term "Black Friday" to describe the phenomenon. The term became popular and was widely used the years after. Retailers learned to take advantage of customer’s excitement and very soon, what happens in the first Friday after Thanksgiving transformed into a ritual for many. Some people are looking for sales the entire day, the retailers take advantage of them and the stores attract thousands of people. Over the years, keeping a balance on this shopping fever became quite difficult. Each year the event gain amplitude, as people would do anything to save some money. You could say that nowadays, the Black Friday is a little bit out of control. And giving the weak economy, there are more and more people who live under mirage of Black Friday, hoping every year that they’ll make the deals of their lives. I think that if we’d like to have a shopping day before Christmas, it doesn’t have to be Black Friday. Spending an entire day into a crowded city, fighting with people over different products, shouldn’t have to be what we’re really looking for this time of the year. The gratitude of Thanksgiving is basically smashed by hundreds of feet tramping on the floors of malls and other shopping centres. Not mentioning there are big chances to get bad or broken products, giving the tiredness and stress we expose by shopping in a day like this. So, my advice is to avoid any Black Friday and relax at home, finally alone after the guest’s leaving and house cleaning. And go shopping a few days after. Send Thanksgiving cards for free.
