Thanksgiving Day is a time of gratitude. Everyone must feel this gratitude for the things they achieved. Some things are always welcome into our lives but other things we can’t be anything but happy that they passed and we no longer have to confront them. People are thankful for their family and friends, for living in harmony with each other, for receiving positive signals from others, love and affection. We can also be thankful for bad things we don’t have any more. People could be happy and glad that they lose weight and they look pretty again. They could be thankful for beating the smoking or the drinking habit. Being cured of a complicated illness or finishing to pay for a credit are also a reasons for gratitude. We can be so grateful for not having all those things. Sometimes, beating the problems makes us feel even better than the personal goals we achieved. Maybe some changes happened at job and we’re happy to know that the angry boss is gone, as the lazy co-worker we had to do the job instead of him. A new and better job is always a reason of smiling and feeling wonderful during the Thanksgiving celebration. The small things can also bring happiness, when they are no longer worrying or disturbing us constantly. We might feel released if a neighbour we argued with many times finally moved out from the house. Or because we solved a dental problem that made us feel uncomfortable for months. The feelings we have for gaining something are quite different for those we have when we get rid of something unpleasant. Many of the things we’ve got due to a positive leap of fate requested no effort on our part. But the things and situations we don’t like in life, rarely disappear all of a sudden. Usually we have to struggle, to fight with ourselves and with others, to speak when we’d like to remain silent and to fight back against the unfair. The tradition of Thanksgiving Day is to share the gratitude with others. Thus every guest you invited for Thanksgiving dinner should write a small note with the things they are happy not to be a part of their lives, as well as those who are welcome and expected to happen.
