21st century, along with many celebrations, brought a phenomenon to amaze the world – Mobile Phones. Those were the days when mobile phones had started to penetrate slowly into our lives, which now have become an integral part of our lives. People had hardly gotten over the fact that they don’t have to rely on landline phones anymore and they can carry a mobile phone anywhere they want to stay connected with people; introduction of SMS was simply “icing on the cake”. What is SMS? SMS is the précised form of “short messaging services”. It enables a mobile user to send a shortly written message to other mobile owner. This message is transmitted through mobile phone. Mostly, SMS has to send under the 160 characters. However, message longer than 160 characters can also be send using the multiple message option. Sending a SMS longer than 160 characters might charge extra money also. In the beginning, people belong to developed countries were blessed enough to take benefit of this miraculous invention. However, with the passage of time, this technology was introduced in third world and now they can also enjoy the facility of free SMS messaging. SMS marketing: ways of doing business have severely been changed since the advent of information technology. Now, doing a business without incorporating information technology seems to be impossible. However, one real jolt, which has awestruck the business world is, usage of mobile phones to perform business activities. Mobile phones primarily are used to market the business and SMS option, to be precise, is widely used for this purpose. Andreas Kaplan, marketing professor, define mobile marketing as “any marketing activity conducted through ubiquitous network to which consumers are constantly connected using a personal mobile phone device”. Mobile marketing is also known as wireless marketing. Promoting business products through SMS marketing is a globally used activity which is considered legal. In Europe first SMS campaign was launched by Txtbomb for an island record release in 2001. In America, it was Labatt brewing company that came up with the idea of SMS marketing in 2002. Another thing which has made SMS marketing more common is option of SMS online. It is the option of sending text messages through websites. Many websites, across the globe, provide this facility free of cost which is indeed a blessing for the business with limited resources. Why SMS/mobile marketing? 1) There are more chances that text message will be open and read by the recipient. Tone of SMS is indeed irresistible and majority of people end up opening it up and reading it. It makes this conduit of marketing more reachable. 2) Chances of getting a response for a text message are also quite high. Mostly mobile phone users are addict to their mobile phones and can’t resist the temptation of replying back. 3) It is the quickest and cheapest way of hitting the maximum number of people at one time. It is specifically a blessing for the small or emerging businesses that do not have the resources to earmark the big amount for marketing activities.
