People who know about stand up comedy, know who Dane Cook is, which is why I am going to skip his introduction. But I will have to mention how this guy got to be so famous and what is it that makes him so funny. Dane Cook started his career sometime around 1994, but it wasn’t until 1998 when he got his big break when he appeared on Comedy Central’s Premium Blend. In 2000 he did a half hour special on Comedy Central Presents. Since then, Dane Cook’s special has won the Comedy Central Stand-up showdown twice in a row. In 2003, he released his first DVD, “Harmful if Swallowed,” which went platinum and since then, he has released many other DVD’s Retaliation, Vicious Circle, and Isolated Incident. Dane Cook is known as the only stand up comedian who built his fan base with the help of social media and currently has over three million twitter followers. He used to reply to fans on MySpace, when it was still being used and was the only artist who did so at that time. However, no artist is an artist until he receives criticism, because Dane Cook received a lot of criticism over the past few years such as being accused of stealing jokes. But if we look more into this matter, then every joke is somehow stolen from some other joke on the planet. “I wanted to create a stage persona for myself that allowed me to really speak about anything I want... So I can be a storyteller, I can be jokey, I can be corny, I can be a little vulgar, I can be a lot vulgar. And I'm not afraid to go anywhere to get the point of the joke across, even if I have to just blabber like a retard until it becomes apparent that I'm a retard and that the audience should laugh.” Dane Cook. Being a stand up comedian, Dane Cook really made a stage persona, where he achieved what he said himself. It is very difficult not to laugh when you watch or listen to his stand up comedy specials. In my opinion, the one thing that makes Dane Cook really funny is his ability to present jokes in a way that people could relate to. Even when saying something like, “this is what I do all day, when you guys are at work” he constructs his jokes in a way that are funny on different levels. Relating stories in a special is something this guy is really great at and a good example of it is from his latest special “Isolated Incident” where he talks about the different between “Free and Absolutely Free,” where he later on relates the difference to a key racial issue between black people and white people. If you want to criticize, you can criticize about everything related to this artist, but if you look at him just for a good laugh, then nothing will sound offensive and in my opinion that is what stand up comedy is all about.
