Thomas Alva Edison and William Kennedy Laurie Dickson borrowed ideas from the contributions of Eadweard Muybridge, Etienne-Jules Marey, and Louis Aime Augustun Le Prince and led the way to the birth of US cinema. They wanted to construct a device that could record movement in film and another device that could view the film. While Dickson took care of the creative and innovative developments, Edison carried out the research program and provided his laboratories. Edison developed the early motion picture cameras and projectors and Dickson created a motor-powered camera called the Kinetograph which could capture motion pictures in 1890. This resulted in the emergence of motion pictures in the 1890s. Edison Studios was then established. The Kinetograph could capture movement with a synchronized shutter and sprocket system which was invented by Dickson himself. The shutter and sprocket system could move the film through the camera by an electric motor. A 35mm film with sprocket holes was used to advance the film. The sprocket system was designed to stop the film roll before the camera’s shutter created a photographic frame. Dickson invented another device – the Kinetoscope – with which he filmed his first film. This was the first motion picture made on photographic film in the United States. It showed the movement of laboratory assistant. It was filmed with a system using tiny images that rotated around the cylinder. Another film was made, this time it was shown to the public. It featured Dickson himself bowing, smiling, and taking off his hat. When you see the movement in the Kinetoscope, it is like how it feels when you watch free streaming movies online. Later on in 1894, the Kinetoscope was improved. It was a box-like viewing device that was a coin-operated cabinet for a single customer. The images from the films were rotated in front of a shutter and an electric lamp-light. This device became popular in carnivals, amusement arcades, and sideshows in much the same way it has become widespread to watch free streaming movies online. Edison and Dickson also invented a prototype sound-film system, the Kinetophonograph, also known as the Kinetophone. Their aim was to create a device that provided unsynchronized sound. Edison and Dickson’s inventions helped make an impact in the motion picture industry. They were some of the pioneers that contributed to the creation of films that you can now watch free streaming movies online.
