Speed blogging - This one of the most important points in blogging. Google likes to see new content daily, and the more the better. The greater number of pages on your blog the higher you will rank in keyword search results. Content quality - As significant as the quantity of your posts is the quality. Your posts should be no less than 300 words. Short 1 or 2 line posts could damage the reputation of your site in your readers eyes and more importantly in google's eyes. Also make sure that you are accurately writing about the keywords you are targeting. Don't call your post "gardening tips" then make the whole post about selling a lawnmower. You can make recommendations but make sure you are providing valuable information to your readers. Backlinks - If you are blogging regularly and your site contains great content, you will naturally gain backlinks from readers posting links to your page on other sites. Readers and other bloggers in your niche do this because they like the content you have and would like to share it with others. If you are brand new to blogging, however, you can increase your sites traffic by posting your own backlinks. The more backlinks a page has, the more important Google will think the page is and will rank it higher for the targeted keywords. Backlinks can be gained through a number of strategies such as article marketing, social bookmarking, posting in forums etc. (There are articles in my archive relating specifically to these strategies). Pingbacks - It is important that you have an extensive list of ping sites set up on your blog. If you are using Wordpress, you will automatically have one called pingomatic set up. This works well but if you want your blog to become indexed to the search engines faster you need to increase this list. This is because Google can see that you are updating your blog regularly and this means they can release the latest information to their users. Permalinks - It is important to change these settings from the default and they need to be set correctly. Permalinks are permanent URL's for specific pages/posts on your blog. (Check my archive for further information on Permalinks and how to set them up correctly) Set your permalinks to include the category and postname, or just the postname. If the title of your post contains the keywords you are targeting then having the permalinks set this way will help you improve your search engine ranking. Heading tags and Title tags - Use these when editing your articles/posts. If you use Wordpress you can change the text by clicking on the 'paragraph' dropdown list and selecting Heading 1,2 or 3. It works best if you choose 3 paragraphs or headings and use each one once. Blog url should have keywords - When choosing a domain name, think about what you are going to be blogging about. What niche are you trying to appeal to. If you use the keywords you are targeting in your domains's url you will rank higher in the search engines because the domain name will be included in the keyword search results. Multimedia - Pictures and Videos help your site rank at the top of the search engines. When search for anything in Google, you will see relevant listings for images or videos at the top of the page.
