HK Equity Fund: Despite the stigma, nuclear energy stocks still have a great deal of upside potential. HK Equity Fund has told clients that, despite the stigma, it remains convinced that upside potential exists in nuclear power equities and believes that opposition to further development of plant technology is steadily diminishing. In a research note, the investment boutique suggested that anti-nuclear power sentiment peaked in the months following the disaster at the Tokyo Electric Power Company-operated nuclear power plant at Fukushima, Japan in March 2011 and, according to surveys, will gradually fade in line with growing demand for clean energy from advanced and emerging markets. “Given the sheer scale of the disaster at Fukushima, it was inevitable that nuclear stocks would face something of a backlash but investors have short memories where the potential for profits exists. Today’s modern plants are a quantum leap ahead of older facilities like Fukushima which, to be fair, failed after a massive earthquake and a powerful tsunami,” said the HK Equity Fund research note. The firm’s view is that investors who are prepared to endure the current disapproval of nuclear power generation will likely be rewarded with superior returns in the fullness of time. “Investment is often a long-term consideration. Very few assets earn huge returns in the short term and nuclear stocks are no exception to this. Right now, fracking is the darling of the energy sector. It can tap reserves that many countries had thought unreachable but many proponents are ignoring the damage that this process visits upon the surrounding environment including earthquakes and the contamination of water supplies,” said a HK Equity Fund energy analyst. HK Equity Fund says that despite the stigma, nuclear power generation remains far cleaner and more sustainable than that derived from burning oil, gas and coal and those who invest in nuclear stocks could well be rewarded with excellent returns.
