Florida Museum of natural history: Native American and natural history exhibits in this museum at the University of Florida. The UF Florida museum of natural history is stocked with a treasure trove of information for children, students, and adults. Butterfly rainforest: Stroll through this 6,400-square-foot screened, outdoor enclosure with subtropical plants and hundreds of living butterflies. Inside, view thousands of Lepidoptera species on the "Wall of Wings" and learn about butterfly and moth biology. See scientists working in the Rearing Lab and other research areas. Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art: The Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art builds and maintains art collections and produces many exhibitions and educational programs for visitors to enjoy. It is a part of the University of Florida. Closed Mondays and state holidays. Museum Store open during Museum hours. Kanapaha Botanical Garden: Herb and botanical garden displaying unusual plants from around the world, this wonderful garden is tucked away in the outskirsts of Gainesville. It has a naturalistic layout where you can get lost in. Most of the garden is cannopied so you can escape the heat. Very educational for florida gardeners and homeowners alike. Paynes Prairie: Nature area with woods and swamp as well as an information center describing the wildlife in the area. This 15,000 acre state preserve is a great place to hike and see wildlife. There are many trails in different sections of this massive park. The visitor center has a film about the park and some exhibits. There are also some beautiful lakes around the park and camping is available. A terrific place to see sand hill cranes, and if you are lucky see wild horses and bisons, which were reintroduced to the area. Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park: The Rawling house is an inviting and relaxful experience where guest can actually visualize the worldwide authors downhome lifestyle. Tour the orange groves and serveral other buildings and absorb the spirit of true Florida Cracker life. This is an experience that will call you back home time and again to Cross Creek. After visiting the house & grounds, don't miss a meal at the Yearling Restaurant in Cross Creek - a tad pricey at lunchtime but delicious! They also have an in-house antique shop in which to browse while waiting for your food. Friendly local staff. The Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo: houses 70 species, and 250 individual animals in its collection, including white handed gibbons, red ruffed lemurs, ocelots, bald eagles, Galapagos tortoises, African grey parrots, and Matschie’s tree kangaroo. This is a community zoo and the training facility for the Zoo Animal Technology Program.
