UNDERSTANDING ISLAM - BASIC TEACHINGS 1ST KALEMA (WORDS OF FAITH) “LA ILAAHA ILLA ALLAHU, MUHAMMADUR RASOOLULLAH” A person when embraces Islam (the accepted Deen of Allah almighty) says the above quoted first words of faith (which are collectively known as the first kalema) as his affirmation to the fact that he/she has accepted with the tongue and endorsed by his/her heart that the attribute of divinity is only for Allah mighty whereas Muhammad (peace be upon him) is His last Messenger. These are simply not the words but this is a firm commitment and assurance that one is now rejecting all the false deities and is submitting to Allah almighty as he slave and servant. These words consist of two clear concepts of denial and acceptance in the first part where one says: (LA ILAAHA ILLA ALLAH ) which means no other Ilaah (Rub - Lord) except Allah - the Exalted. Letting aside the idols, even the prophets, the angels, the other living/static creatures, or any other person/authority has no power except what has been delegated by Allah Himself. The attribute of divinity is only for Allah almighty - the Most supreme. Therefore every act of worship is only for Allah almighty alone. In the 2nd part of the said kalema, one says (MUHAMMADUR RASOOLULLAH) This is again a confession with the tongue and endorsement by heart that Muhammad (Peace be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah almighty. This term clarifies that no one other than Allah has the right to be followed except for His prophet Muhammad as His last Messenger. Clarifying the endness of prophethood, Allah almighty says in Quran: “ Muhammad (Peace be upon him) is not the father on any man amongst you but he is the Messenger of Allah and the last (end)of the Prophets and Allah is Ever All Aware of everything.” (V.33:40) Clarifying the obedience to the prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) in Quran Allah almighty says: “And whatsoever the Messenger Muhammad (Peace be upon him) gives you, take it and whatsoever he forbids you, abstain from it.” (V.59:7) and also in another verse: “Say (O Muhammad) (to mankind) ‘if you (really) love Allah, then follow me’.” (V.3:31)
