A former champion cyclist who was hit by a car while out training has been awarded almost £14million in Britain’s biggest ever compensation payout. Manny Helmot was riding on his bike in his native Guernsey back in 1998 when he was hit head-on by a speeding car. As a result Helmot, who had represented Guernsey at the Kuala Lumpar Commonwealth Games earlier that year, was in hospital for nine months with severe brain injuries. Today 39-year-old Helmot is partially blind, has lost the use of his right arm, and suffers double vision and mental health problems. His injuries are so severe that he will never be able to work, drive, or ride a bicycle, and his mother Rose was forced to give up her job in order to look after her son full-time. The Helmot family sued the insurance company of the car driver, and after a 12-year legal battle, Guernsey’s Court of Appeal awarded Helmot with the record-breaking compensation settlement of £13.75million to help cover his lifetime care. The compensation award was based on the potential earnings that Helmot has now missed out on, as his injuries prevented him from pursuing a career as a professional cyclist. Speaking after the compensation award was made, Rose Helmot said: “We are really thrilled by the result of the appeal. He will need care for the rest of his life and we won’t be around forever so we are pleased that we know his future is safe. “The size of the award is very large but it must last for Manny’s estimated lifetime, which is another 40 years or more, hopefully.
