Understanding The Analysis of Your Blog Traffic

Understanding the analysis of your blog traffic is an invaluable tool for many reasons. But before you can make full use of the analytics, you should understand how to interpret the data. Most blog hosting companies will provide you with basic traffic information, but leave you with the task of interpretation. However, the data you receive from your blog hosting provider can in most cases, be completely overwhelming, especially if you don't understand how to apply it to your particular home based business. So the purpose of this article is to breakdown this analysis into bite size chunks and make the data easier to understand, so let's go:

Understanding The Analysis of Your Blog Traffic.

Ok, we'll start by examining the most basic data - the average visitors to your home based business blog on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.

The visitor figures would appear to be the most accurate measure of your blog's activity. As you would naturally assume that the more traffic you see, the better your blog is doing, however, this is an inaccurate perception. Because, you must also look at the behaviour of your visitors once they arrive at your blog, as this is a more accurate gauge of the effectiveness of your blogs landing page.

Now, there is a great misconception about what are more commonly known as "hits" and what is quality traffic. Hits means the number of information requests received by the server. To explain this in a little more detail: If you can imagine that a hit can simply equate to the number of graphics per page, you'll begin to see how overblown the concept of hits can really be.

For example, if your blog homepage has 15 graphics on it, the blog server records this as 15 hits, when in reality, as far as we are concerned as home based business blog owners, are in actual fact interested in only single visitors checking out a single page on our home based business blog. So as you can see, looking only at hits, and ignoring everything else, is not a useful way in understanding the analysis of your blog traffic.

However, let's not forget that the more visitors you have to your blog, the more accurate your interpretation of their behaviour can be. The greater the traffic to your blog, the more precise your analysis can be of the overall trends in your visitor's behaviour, as the smaller the number of visitors to your home based business blog, the more the analysis results can be skewed.

So the real aim, is to use the blog traffic stats as a means to figure out how well or indeed how badly your blog is working for your visitors, and of course one way in which you can determine this is to find out the approx length of time each visitor spends on each page or post of your blog. If the time spent is brief, it usually indicates a problem somewhere, and then your challenge is to figure out exactly what that problem is.

Understanding The Analysis of Your Blog Traffic.

Some Common Problem Areas.

It could be that your keywords are not targeted correctly, thereby bringing traffic from people who might be looking for something else. Or maybe your blog graphics are confusing or possibly intimidating and a turn off, causing the visitor to scurry for the exit door rapidly. So you can use the time your blog visitors are spending on your blog to identify and pinpoint a specific problem or problems, which can help you to rectify the problem as quickly as you can, and then you can use this data further to gauge how effective your fix continues to be.

Additionally, these blog traffic stats can help you to also determine the more effective and efficient areas of your home based business blog. If, for example, you have a page or post that you believe is important and of interest to your visitors, yet they are exiting quickly, then it is obvious that you would need to fix it.

As an example, maybe you could improve the linking to this page by making the link more noticeable and enticing, or you could possibly improve the look of the page or the ease that your visitors can actually access the information that they are looking for.

On the other hand, more positively, if you notice that your home based business blog visitors are spending a lot of time on certain pages or posts, that maybe you as the owner had not considered particularly important or relevant, you obviously could look at your sales copy and marketing focus for that particular page or blog post, and use it elsewhere.

Hopefully, as you can see by now, these stats can, and should, reveal some vital information about the effectiveness of your individual blog pages, and also your visitor habits and motivations, and this in itself is essential information to any successful home based business internet marketing campaign.

Understanding The Analysis of Your Blog Traffic.

What Are Your Visitors Looking For?

Your blog should have a number of different pages to which you direct your traffic to. Some of these pages you can expect a reasonably quick exit from, such as an order page or checkout.

However, not every visitor to your home based business site is going to find exactly what he or she is looking for immediately, so your stats may show you a number of different exits. This is considered to be normal unless you notice an exit trend on a particular page that is not intended to be an exit page in the first place.

So, in the case that a percentage of your visitors are exiting your blog on a page not meant to be exited from, you can examine that particular page to establish exactly what the problem maybe. And once you identify the weaknesses on that page, you can make the necessary adjustments in your content or graphics to reduce this.

Now that you have analyzed your visitor stats, it is time to look at your keywords and phrases. Notice especially if some particular keywords are directing a certain type of visitor to your blog. The more targeted your visitor is (meaning that they find what they are looking for on your blog) the more valuable that keyword phrase is to you.

However, it is important to remember that if you find a large number of your visitors are being directed - or should I say misdirected - to your blog by a particular keyword or phrase, that keyword then should be analysed in greater detail. After all, your keywords are vital in bringing quality BUYING traffic to your site who are ready to do business with you. So close analysis of the keywords your traffic is using to find your home based business, will give you a vital advantage in understanding the analysis of your blog traffic.

Finally, if you happen to notice that your traffic is finding you and your business by typing in your name or your company name, it is time to celebrate (just a little anyway) As this means you have achieved a reasonable level of brand recognition, and this is a positive sign that you are becoming an authority within your niche.
