Auditioning for an independent film can be quite stressful for someone who is new to the scene. There are many things to keep in mind, the first is that the power is in your hands. What you bring to the table in an audition is your choice and that will usually start with confidence. Being polite and friendly goes without saying when you show up and introduce yourself. If you have to wait be respectful and patient, that will go a long way in showing your character. Who wants to work with someone who throws a tantrum or thinks their time is much more important? Showing up prepared will show true interest and allow any audition to go smoothly. Pay attention to what a casting director says or what is stated in the casting call and bring everything needed. Bring plenty photos of your head shot and resume because you never know who will all want one. If you don't have any professional head shots it is highly suggested you get some, this is how you will be remembered when the final choices of who to cast are made; you need to look appealing. If the sides are sent ahead of time or available somewhere, memorize, print and bring them. Do a little research on the characters being cast and get a clear idea of what traits they are looking for and work on doing that multiple ways. Showing a broad range of emotion is important because you are not always going to be sure of the traits being sought. During an audition there will most likely be marks laid out. These are usually with pieces of tape on the ground to show where the camera will be aimed and focused. A casting director may not specify you to hit a mark, but being self aware and doing that will boost your chances of being cast. While holding auditions for “Deviant” watching synergy grow and seeing how each individual works off the energy given in a scene lead to some very impressive auditions. If there is someone reading lines with you during an audition listen carefully to their lines and work on reacting instead of acting. This will allow you to improve your timing and allow you to locate the correct emotion for the situation and express it. On the same note, while reading you and any other actors on set are the only things that exist. You need to block out the camera, the director and anyone else not in the scene to truly be in that moment. Stay up to date on your craft. Work daily on scenes, monologues, videos. If you work well in classroom settings take classes or acquire an instructor. You can learn many tips and tricks by watching video auditions or acting reels online. Having passion and striving to improve yourself will show through when the time comes and can put you ahead of any competition. Recording yourself and watching it may allow yourself to find and improve on any weaknesses. You can watch your facial expressions, eye movements and see any twitches or ticks you may have. Attend as many auditions as possible and be prepared for rejection, do not let it discourage you.
