Onassis Public Benefit Foundation, founded in memory of the late Alexander Onassis has funded projects which relate either to Greece or Greek culture and civilization. Three areas in which the foundation has excelled are the Cultural Centre, the Hellenic Library and Public Benefit. Cultural Centre - Inaugurated at the end of 2010, the Onassis Cultural Centre promotes modern cultural expression, supports new Greek artists, cultivates international collaborations and endevours to support education and lifelong learning as well as the co-existence of the sciences, innovation and the Arts. The Hellenic Library - The Hellenic Library preserved as the perpetual property of the Greek Nation, is accessible to researchers, and is being gradually uploaded on the Internet so that the texts can reach as many people as possible. Public Benefit - Up until 2010, the Public Benefit Programme made donations in education to primary and secondary schools in Greece as well as abroad in Greek communities. It has also given aid to research organizations in the field of medical, environmental and archaeological research as well as providing humanitarian aid in natural disasters. Part of the Public Benefit Program is of course the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Centre. The Onassis Cardiac Surgery 127 bed capacity Centre (OCSC) completed in 1992, has since then been handed over to the Greek State. Costing 75 million dollars in 1992, the world class hospital features intensive care units, intermediate intensive care units, coronary intensive care units, hemodynamic laboratories, a paedo-cardiosurgical nursing unit, a cardiosurgical nursing unit, a cardiological nursing unit and an electrophysical and pacemaker laboratory. Up to the end of 2010 the hospital has admitted over 120,000 patients. Roughly 30,200 cardiovascular operations have been performed and about 1,000,000 out-patient consultations and diagnostic tests have been logged. To TEDMED live Athens – Health Forward, an interactive global conference on innovation in health and science in general, covering prevention, early diagnosis, new treatments and best practices, etc was held on Sunday, April 21, 2013, at the Onassis Foundation Cultural Center. 20 acclaimed, internationally distinguished speakers attended and spoke about innovative ideas, treatments and good practices in terms of illnesses that affect millions of people.
