The city of Gurgaon has grown rapidly from being a town in Haryana to becoming a very important commercial city of the NCR region sharing its border with the capital of the country. This city has been witnessing a constant influx of people. The basic Infrastructure is not geared to keep pace with the increasing population and commercialisation of the city. With the highest per capita income in the country, the number of vehicles on the road is ever-increasing. Lack of Public mode of transport has further fuelled the need for owning vehicles and hence each day there is an increase in the number of vehicles on the road. The authorities have failed to manage the ever-increasing traffic volume. Traffic congestion is a regular sight and has become a menace for the people .The loss due to congestion (including fuel wastage), slow speed of freight vehicles and waiting time at toll plaza is insurmountable. Lack of good roads combined with poor condition of service lanes leads to lot of chaos and confusion every day. The bottlenecks in the road further aggravate the problem. This is further compounded with the advent of Monsoons. While the dark clouds may bring lot of cheer to people and obvious respite from sweltering heat, it also brings with it the nightmare of having to wade through the water manoeuvring through the pot holed roads and piled up traffic to reach destinations. Improper drainage systems lead to water logging and the traffic literally comes to a halt. All the busy junctions of the city right from the toll plaza on the Expressway to Shankar Chowk , Iffco Chowk , Rajiv Chowk, Hero Honda Chowk, not to mention the internal roads of the city witnesses heavy traffic jam. Taking diversions in such a scenario is not an option since all the peripheral roads are also usually choked. Authorities are often caught off guard as the city witnesses blocked drains and malfunctioning of traffic lights. The toll collection process at the Express-way further adds to the woes. Mornings and Evenings are particularly testing and the traffic in uncontrollable. Soaring tempers and road rage is a common sight. Lane driving is a difficult proposition in such a scenario. Lack of traffic Police personnel and law enforcement does not help either. There is a constant blame game among authorities as to who is responsible for this mess. The traffic police's role should be that of enforcement, which they are trained for. Controlling traffic is traffic engineering, which should be the responsibility of the road and planning authorities. Both should work in tandem to combat this problem. Also it is imperative that the public transport system be strengthened so that people are encouraged to use them. The number of buses and their network can help immensely to resolve this issue. It is important that the situation be corrected and controlled immediately to sustain the continued growth and development of this shinning city.
