How to Organize Your Book Collection

Organizing,Art and Culture
If homeowners have very large book collections that are just begging to be put into some kind of order, they will likely need to come into the process with a plan of action. In most cases, people will want to organize their literature by subject matter. To be successful, they'll surely need an elegant bookshelf that offers plenty of space. Shelves that are made from cherry, oak, maple or pine will usually stand out in any decorative scheme. If individuals are true literature lovers, they may want to buy multiple bookshelves and set them up in various rooms of the house. The home will soon become a haven for bookworms.

Science

In nearly all instances, people will want to keep their science books together. If men and women have previously graduated from college and have quite a few old textbooks sitting around, they should hold onto them instead of selling them back to the publisher. Whether homeowners have studied astronomy, geology, chemistry or physics, the textbooks can be set up on the bottom shelf and brought out when needed. Popular science books can also be placed in the area. Bookworms who have long loved Stephen Hawking or Carl Sagan, for example, will likely cherish works by those particular authors. Publications that explore the great questions of the cosmos should never be thrown out.

Religion and Philosophy

Literature lovers might also have some works that are deeply connected to religion and philosophy. If they are feeling particularly spiritual, they can place one of these works on a stand on the bookshelf to show off to visitors. Many people collect religious books that have been passed down through the family. Rare books can be placed behind glass so that they don't continue to degrade with age. Books on Greek philosophy and Eastern meditation techniques might also be kept with the religious publications.

History and Biography

Histories and biographies can also be kept together in one particular section. Lovers of American history will enjoy works on George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and other great figures. In fact, some men and women might even devote an entire shelf to presidential biographies. The biographies can even be put in alphabetical order. Enthusiasts might also choose to combine certain historical time periods. Publications that cover medieval marriages, Roman gladiators and Chinese architecture can all be shelved together.

Classic Fiction

Separate bookshelves can also be set aside for all of the greatest works of literature. Men and women who have collected books by Hemingway, Fitzgerald and Twain, for example, will want to keep them in immaculate condition. Some of the collector's editions that are associated with these classic works will come with gold or silver etchings. Hardbound books, which are usually worth quite a bit of money, can be protected with special jackets.

Coffee Table Books

People might choose to keep some of their prized coffee table books in the center of the living room. When guests are visiting, they can browse the books as they enjoy their appetizers on the sofa. Most coffee table books have brilliantly vivid pictures and are usually organized around certain themes. Publications featuring wonderful images of Bob Dylan or the Beatles, for instance, will make fine display items. These can be rotated in and out every few months.

Keeping Books Safe

Once homeowners have settled on a way to organize their various book genres, they should attempt to keep their possessions from falling apart through time. Careful dusting techniques can help quite a bit. If men and women ever decide to sell or donate their old books so that they can buy new books, they'll be able to complete the transactions without any backlash.
