In all areas of the Caribbean islands there are Christmas celebrations in Caribbean style. Each year guests from around the world travel to the Caribbean here to experience this highly anticipated celebration. During this season those celebrating adorn their homes and restaurants with colorful balloons, tinsel, wreaths, vibrant lights, bright banners, and bells. People will attempt to be able to obtain new curtains and tablecloths. They celebrate as a family with large gatherings that are very festive. Places serving food choose special dishes and drinks during Christmas time to celebrate in true Caribbean style. There are many traditional dishes that are served every year as part of this holiday celebration. They include ackee, curried goat, roasted chicken or duck, rice and peas, and sometimes stewed ox tail. The most popular drink during the season is sorrel which is a combination of rum, sugar, cinnamon, orange peel, and sorrel sepal. The celebration can be seen in major shopping centers and areas where one might go to find gifts. In addition there is food available for guests to purchase and enjoy alone or with their families. Crafts have a holiday theme and traditional decorations take center stage as everyone celebrates the festive season. During Christmas celebrations in the Caribbean people dress up in clothing that is bright, casual yet smart. A lot of people will wear hats. Some will even wear clothes that have been made exclusively for the festive season. One of the favorite traditions of the many Christmas celebrations in the Caribbean are the large street parades with attendees wearing elaborate masquerade costumes. This tradition of celebration is known as Junkanoo, and is very popular in the Bahamas. There are many different things that can be seen that people might not understand and may be seen as unusual. These include ornamental cow heads, devils, horse heads, and wild Indians. During Christmas celebrations in the Caribbean one will find that there is no shortage of festivity. Everyone is happy and the joy of the celebrations can be felt by all. The food, experiences, and decorations represent this happy time full of rejoicing. Large scale holiday ornaments are very popular choices for decoration of businesses and public areas. There is generally always a party or celebration that one would be invited to attend. Santa Clause is a part of the Christmas celebrations in the Caribbean. The children take part in the tradition of leaving biscuits, mince pies and milk for Santa hoping for their stockings to be filled. One of the best experiences for an outsider to have of the Christmas celebrations in Caribbean style is the ability to celebrate with the amazing music. While traditional Christmas carols are still sung, there are also reggae versions of the old favorites and new reggae and socca tunes that will quickly surpass the popularity of other festive music.
