Pain. It's unpleasant. We all feel it, but some feel it much more than others. Nearly 86 million American adults, according to WebMD, are affected by chronic pain on a daily basis. It may be constant. It may be dull or extremely sharp, but it is all radiated from the central nervous system. Now a new study shows that there are some people who experience chronic type pain due to the fact that they have rewired their brains to be technically more sensitive to pain. Chronic pain conditions such as low back pain and fibromyalgia actually cause changes in the brain's genetic structure and affect cortical function. The study tested two specific things. It tested for whether alterations in DNA methylation can be found in the brain lengthy periods after chronic neuropathic pain is induced in the periphery which was tested using the spared nerve injury modal. Secondly it sought to find out whether these injury-associated changes were in any way reversible thru interventions created specifically to reverse the pathologies directly associated with the chronic pain. According to the new study performed on mice, the conclusions found that these changes can be detected long after the original injury point and at distance located far away from the original site of injury. Most importantly though, the study found the changes are reversible with environmental manipulation. Researcher Maral Tajerian summed the research up by stating "This paper gives me hope. It appears the brain is a much more plastic organ than scientists realized even a decade ago, and the actions we take today can actually change how our brains function tomorrow.” Continuing the summation, it appears fun and friends do play a big part in pain management. “A different environment will give you a different experience of pain. By changing the environment we could change the pain," she said. "Having fun and friends is really good for you."
