5 Mistakes From Which Self Publishers Should Stay Away

Publishing
The popularity of self publishing has made several authors & writers to try the hands on publishing the book. The availability of several tools to print a book or publish a book has made the task simpler as well as time consuming. However, in this simpler task of self publishing, several self publishers tend to make certain mistakes that lead the project towards disaster. Below listed are the 5 most common mistakes, from which publishers should stay careful. Have a look and stay away from them in your next self-publishing project.

  • ISBN usage
What do you understand about ISBN? Do you use one ISBN for one book or you do use it again for some other book? Many a times, it happens that authors re-use the ISBN of the book, which is now not for sale or was offered many years ago. If you are also doing so, then you are creating huge confusion for yourself as well as your readers. Once you have used a particular ISBN for a book, then it is registered in the database everywhere. ISBN is the identity of the book, and you must not give same identity to two books.

  • Quoting lyrics, stanzas of other authors
In most case, you would have seen that authors quote some lines, or lyrics of other authors. To write a book in an innovative way, several authors get inspired by this, and they as well quote the sayings in their work. If you are also planning to do so, then do conform about the copyright laws and violations terms before. As per law, in certain cases, even if you quote from other’s work, along with giving the credits, then too you are liable to be fined. So, before you plan to do anything like this, then think twice and consider the laws as well.

  • Deciding image resolution:
In majority cases, authors, when plan up to do self publishing, make mistakes in selecting the perfect image resolution. If you decide about the image resolution by just seeing the image on computer screen, then you might have to repent later. There is a technical reason behind this, which is important for you to understand. The graphics resolution on computer screen is 72 dpi in RGB colorscape; whereas, the graphics resolution while printing image on paper should be 300 dpi in CMYK colorscape.

  • Fonts selection
When self-publishing a book, you are required to take several decisions on the own. Yes, every minor to major decision would be taken by you, and that is where confusion occurs. In most cases, self-publishers get confused with the selection of elements like typefaces, typography, design, serifs, and ligatures. Never take random decisions regarding this, as this would greatly affect the outcome.

  • Memoir writing
In our list, this is the 5th most common mistake done by several self-publishers. If you choose to write memoir in the third person, then that might create confusion for your readers. It is better to keep the memoir simple and straight forward. If you try to introduce creativity or uniqueness here, then it might be possible that your view point may not get conveyed easily.
