Weddings in Rajasthan

Relationships,Dating
Rajasthan, beautiful and colorful state, is rich with culture and heritage. Rajasthan attracts large number of people with its folk songs and dance, heritage, tradition, culture, food, colorful festivals, attires, jewellery, large deserts and camels etc. You get the true Indian cultural feeling in Rajasthan. So, one can imagine how rich with color and culture a Rajasthan wedding would be.

It is an auspicious day for both – the Rajasthani bride Rajasthani groom as well as their relatives, families and friends on both the sides. The bride and the groom in Rajasthan matrimony are expected to take part in all small and big wedding events, where marriage functions are a long elaborated process lasting for more than a week, adding more hue to the colors of marriage.

As per Rajasthan believes Akhateej, that is the third day of Baisakhi month (April) is considered to be the most lucky and auspicious day to commence a wedding. To conduct a marriage on this day, no pundit/priest is required to be consulted. Not only Rajasthani but other religions also have dates that are considered auspicious especially for commencing a marriage like - dhulandi, dev uthani, janam ashtami, basant panchmi etc with Jats, Sunar, Nai, Gujar, and Mina communities. If not these days, a priest sets a mahurat i.e. the day that decided for the marriage to take place depending upon the solar and lunar positions.

A typical Rajasthani bride is dressed up in deep red color ghagra chunni with lots of ornaments and the groom wears a sherwani with Rajasthani juttis. The typical cuisine that you would find in a Rajasthan wedding would include – sounth ke ladoo, papad ki sabzi, motichoor ke ladoo, meeth paak, bajre ki roti, moong ka halwa, chuttni prepared with dry fruits and dal bhatti churma. It’s also a custom that every body except for the bride and the groom are supposed to feed the groom’s horse with rose petals and sweets before the barat leaves.

There are many ceremonies that take place before and during a Rajasthani wedding, each having its own importance and significance. The ceremonies are as follow:

9. Engagement – the very first ceremony is that of the engagement where the bride and groom exchange rings, the elders bless them and then there is a huge feast for all friends and family.

10. Staphna of Ganpati – Lord Ganapati is known as the god of intelligence. His blessings are taken before commencing any big event of celebration. A statue of Ganapati is brought and placed in the temple in the groom’s house asking him to seek blessing from the Lord.

11. Pithi dastoor - In this ceremony, the family and relatives of the bride and groom apply turmeric paste on them in their home. As per Rajasthani customs, its believed that after this ceremony the bride and groom are not allowed to step outside the house till the marriage.

12. Mehfil – this takes place a day before the marriage either at the bride’s house or the grooms place, both the families gather here to enjoy the famous Rajasthani dance ‘ghumar’; which is followed by a dinner party.

13. Janeva – this is a very holy and important ceremony. It takes place in the morning of the wedding date where the groom dresses up in saffron color and performs a havan, offering his prayers to agni devta; here the groom is to wear a pious piece of thread on his body. Wearing which means either taking abandonment from all worldly business or getting married.

14. Palla ceremony - the palla ceremony, also known as palla dastoor, is when the groom and his father in the early hours of wedding day comes to the bride’s house gifting her jewellery, dresses and her wedding dress.

15. Toran rasam – the entrance of the bride’s house is completely decorated with flowers straw termed as toran, the groom comes and breaks this with a straw in order to shoo away the evil’s eye from his bride.

16. Marriage – after all these ceremonies comes the D-day, the wedding is commenced by the father of the bride doing the kanyadan that is to give away his daughter to the groom; followed by paani grahna and pheras .Then, comes the saptpad, after the pheras around the agni the bride and groom takes seven steps towards the sun god together, after which is bidai where finally the bride departs to her grooms house.
