Celebrations are always a good idea, they help you let your hair down, meet old as well as new people, strike interesting conversations, dance & sing, have a fantastic evening or even a few sometimes, along with mouth watering gastronomical treats that may probably be seen as holiday weight later also. However these same celebrations become a double whammy when there is a birthday along with a celebration, especially if the occasion is Christmas. During Christmas, or the week from 24th onwards right until New Year is considered as holiday season in most countries, especially in the west. People are taking vacations, having parties, dinners, get togethers on a daily basis. Festivities are all around the place. Almost like the world is transformed and we are on some happy fairy tale like planet, the one we wish to never leave. It is a wonderful time spent in the most wonderful way; after all it is such a merry time of the year. However, everyone doesn’t feel similarly about the holiday season. Ask people who have their birthdays during the holiday season. Quite a few feel their birthday is lost in all the celebrations that take place for the festivities of the season. “It doesn’t feel special” will be their usual comeback, specially those born on the day of Christmas that is 25th December, those born on new year eve, 31st December, and more than anybody those born on 1st January. Since the festivities are in full swing on Christmas Eve, Christmas and New Year Eve most birthdays go unnoticed, while those born on the 1st of January have a bigger concern. All parties are done the new year has come in every one is taking stalk of the gone year and making resolutions for the one that has just come. Everything has settled down, the environment is calm, the festivities are coming to an end as everyone is going to return to normal life next day, nobody wants to celebrate on the 1st of January after bringing in the new year with a bang the previous night. These 1st January born truly feel the blues on their birthday along with others, but it is worse for them as it is their birthday! If you have friends or family born during the festive season here are some fun ideas you can use to make them know they are special and their special day matters to you more than they know. Throw a off beat party: Change the theme of the gathering from Christmas or new years to whatever the birthday girl/boy likes and celebrate the festivities along with the birthday not the other way around. Festivities do not need to be traditional. They need to be joyous! Gift calendar: Send them a gift everyday for a week until their birthday. Create riddles, make a story line weave in the gifts. Let them be excited every single day wondering what you would be sending. Chances are they wouldn’t care as much about what the party or gathering is about, because they are so happy! Blend it in: on the special day of your loved one if you are having a party to celebrate the festivities in a traditional sort of way and don’t wish to change that, you can do that and still let birthday girl/ boy feel special. Make sure you let each guest know about the birthday when sending the invite, let them know about what you plan to do to incorporate the birthday into the plan. You could ask each guest to bring a small gift for the birthday girl/boy, which everyone can present at mid night while bursting into a session of a street dance to bring in the birthday or Santa singing happy birthday. Do it in your style. Alternate calendar: Find out the birthday girl/ boys birthday in the Hindu calendar or any other so that they believe in or something you came up with (make it up if you know how to validate it!) and plan a huge birthday surprise for them then. Festivities bring joy and sometimes blues, but we can turn either into another. The power always lies with us. Let’s make good use of it.
