How to come up with research objectives An objective is a purpose that can be achieved within reasonable time frame with available resources. Research objective is a clear, declarative and concise statement that gives direction in investigating the variables. A research objective focuses on how to measure variables, and sometimes can be directed towards finding the difference or relationship between two variables. Generally a research objective is a statement that describes what the researcher is trying to achieve at the end of the research. A research objective is often headed by verbs such as; to establish, to describe, to identify, to estimate, to compare, to analyze and to evaluate. These infinitives form one characteristic of a research objective, mainly because every research has a motive to be achieved. The objectives should also be SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time bound).they objectives should also be relevant, observable, feasible, and measurable. When coming up with a research objective, the above characteristics should be taken into consideration. These characteristics will help the researcher to formulate research objectives that directly related to the research study. Therefore the researcher will avoid collecting data that is not strictly necessary for solving the problem that is defined in the research question. There are two types of research objectives; the specific objectives and the general objectives. A researcher should be able to state clearly the two objectives. Specific objectives are short term and narrow, while general objectives can be broken down into small parts that are logically connected to form specific objective. Specific objectives are more and they address various aspects while general objective is a result of accomplishing specific objective. The following guidelines must be considered when stating objectives; • They should be concise and brief • They should explain the different aspects of the problem • They should specify exactly what the researcher will do, how and for what purpose • They should be realistic under the local conditions
