The electrical resistivity method is something used by geographers primarily. It is used to measure the resistivity of soils and rocks. It is a complicated process that involves the use of certain tools like the resistivity meter. It works by basically injecting a current straight into the earth using two electrodes. This enables them to measure the difference between the electrodes, which feeds them the information to determine the geography beneath the earth’s surface. What the Information is Used For The geophysicists who gather the data from one of these exercises will use it to determine a variety of things. They can tell how much depth is between the surface and groundwater, or how much depth is between the surface and bedrock. They can also use the information to map the stratigraphy, clay aquitards, and salt-water intrusions. All these things are what scientists use to characterize the subsurface hydrogeology. There are many other ways this information can be helpful as well. For example: mapping the extent of soil and groundwater contamination, or estimating the thickness of landfill. New Technology This technique and techniques like it are relatively new methods that are being referred to as Geo Vision, and the ones who specialize in this new area are often referred to as GeoVision geophysicists. The name comes from the ability to see the geography beneath the earth. This field has progressed to the point where they are able to quickly form two dimensional images with the data received on site. The newest tools are being utilized to help us understand our own earth.
