Living with dementia is a very challenging experience that people over the age of 65 usually go through. When you are diagnosed with this condition, you are typically left vulnerable, considering that it has a huge impact on your mental capabilities. Other than memory loss, the condition also comes with a gradual loss of your ability to understand situations as well as speech and language problems. All these can make it more and more difficult for you to carry out even the simplest tasks over time and the day will come when you’ll need assistance from your family or a dementia home care professional. Dementia Home Care: The Planning Stage It’s important to plan for getting the necessary assistance in case you’re diagnosed with the condition one day. That way, your loved ones won’t be completely overwhelmed by the situation in case it does occur. One of the things that need to be discussed beforehand is the question of who’s going to be responsible for deciding on the care setup and who’s going to handle your finances when you can no longer do it for yourself. You should also discuss whether you’ll be cared for by a family member or a professional caregiver and where you’re going to live. Dementia Home Care: The Daily Routines It is important to have a daily routine when caring for someone with this condition because this makes the task much easier both for the patient and the caregiver. Although you won’t have to strictly follow the routine every single day as there will always be room for minor adjustments, the routine will at least give you and your caregiver a sense of consistency. Your routines will therefore need to include consistent times for such repetitive tasks as bathing, eating, sleeping, and waking up. Dementia Home Care: The Social Plan Your care plan for a dementia patient should include visits from family and friends as well as outdoor activities such as a walk around the neighborhood or a weekend picnic at the park. Of course, the level of activity you can handle will change as your condition progresses, so these social activities will have to be adjusted over time. It’s important not to completely eliminate them from your routines, though, because socialization can help delay the progress of the condition in most cases. In the beginning, social activities may be focused on your interests and then it may be changed to activities designed specifically for dementia patients in time. This condition (and planning for it) may not really be a very pleasant topic to discuss, but it’s important to plan for it carefully if you want to live out the rest of your life as smoothly as you can. Bear in mind that things could easily become a lot more unpleasant if you’re caught off-guard by a diagnosis of dementia. If you’ve planned for the eventuality, however, it won’t be too much of a burden (although it may still be a bit discouraging) if it does come to pass one day. In any kind of situation, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
