Sundowner's syndrome is commonly seen in seniors with Alzheimer's disease and dementia. The reason for the frequent occurrence of this condition is still unknown. Trying to know as much as possible about the syndrome and how to treat the symptoms is the only way to help the seniors take care of themselves. You have many professional agencies, providing personal care services to elders. They are well versed with the condition and have the experience and expertise to handle this condition. We have mentioned some tips that will help you with what to expect when you are dealing with an elderly suffering from this syndrome. This syndrome gets its name from the fact that the symptoms usually do not show themselves before sunset. Strange, but true. Even the experts are baffled as to why this happens. Experts are of the opinion that it is caused by accumulation of all that happened during the day and raises its head in the evening, leading the seniors to feel helpless, overwhelmed or even stressed. Some of them even begin to feel like leaving to going somewhere or do something as they feel restless. Family caregivers should monitor whenever their loved ones want to go out alone as they might hurt themselves. It can make a senior feel depressed or scared when they suffer from this condition. Try to learn the patterns and behavior of an elderly with Sundowner's syndrome as this will help you become better equipped than before. You will exactly know what soothes them and what makes them flare, alike. Make sure your loved ones are sticking to their regular sleep cycle. This keeps the symptoms in control. Try to discourage naps at noon time and encourage light therapy in the morning to help your loved one feel active and ready for the day. Ensure that you keep your house well lit to prevent your loved ones from napping. The elderly should do their routine chores usually at the same time each day so that they are not stressed by their activities at the end of the day. The more planned the routine, the better the chance for seniors to know what to expect. They can be less overwhelmed than before. Family members should ensure they receive enough stimulation during the day so that they do not feel restless in the evening. Engage in activities that interests them and are good for their health, such as stretching exercises, walking, talking with others, word games and puzzles. However, this stimulation should gradually reduce as you reach the sunset time. You can switch to soft or soothing music, and visitors should be avoided during this period. The caffeine intake should also be reduced during sleep time. It is best to limit caffeine intake in the morning, as well. Seniors should be encouraged to switch to non caffeine beverages. Herbal tea or milk make great options to prepare for bed. Family members struggling to provide care should consider hiring professional personal care service providers to take care of their beloved elderly. A good support system can make a huge difference. A professional care giver can take over in cases of emergencies or when the primary caregiver needs some time to take care of themselves. Family caregivers can also consult with their loved one’s doctor. Many symptoms can be managed with medications that can help regulate their mood. There is a variety of different medications that can be used depending on the symptoms that your loved.
