Bicycle fenders are something that many people don't consider when they’re thinking of cycling. This is because in most western countries if the weather isn’t good people just hop in their cars. Even if the weather is good cars are our main way of getting around. For those who do ride bikes it is usually for recreation, exercise or sport. So what do we need mountain bike fenders for you might think. Bike fenders are specifically designed to prevent dirt, mud and anything else on the ground from being thrown into the air by the rotation of the tires. Good fenders will help keep all that filth from the streets or ground from spraying up all over your pants and the rest of you. Fenders easily fasten to your bike's frame to guard against that. The next thing you have to do is decide which of the fenders from the different manufacturers would be best for you to install on your bike. There are full fenders, flap fenders, there are bolt on and clip on and different style and colors. They each have their advantages and disadvantages depending on how you intend on using them. The bolt on type are the most permanent and give you the most protection but they take a few minutes to install so if you don’t plan on keeping them on all the time they may not be the right choice. They do stay in place the best and are great for wet weather but are not the best for mud as they can get clogged up with the mud. One other problem is on modern bikes there are not always places on the bike to bolt them to. That is where the flap fenders come in. If you are doing some riding in the mud like in a trail race in wet weather you will probably want this type of fender. They don’t give you as much protection though but there is enough freedom from the tire that the mud doesn’t get built up and get stuck there. Most often these fenders quickly clip on and off so depending on the day you can ride with or without them very easily. The clip on full fender type are usually able to be mounted to any bike but as you might expect they don’t always stay in place as well. This is where it is important to buy quality products. I am no different than most of you if I can save a buck I will but it is not worth saving a buck believe me if the fender is always coming loose or sifting around and your having to stop and adjust it. Quality usually costs and this is one place I think it is worth paying the few extra dollars. Bicycle fenders are widely available from retail outlets both online and in your communities especially from bike shops, department or hardware stores. Additionally they are really fairly easy to install. I think it is a most to at least have a set of clip on mountain bike fenders ready and waiting to put on when the day demands it. You will find your rides much more enjoyable and comfortable when you have to ride in the wet. Dave McIntosh has enjoyed cycling for years.
