There’s an interesting article in a publication called Sporting Business Journal that talks about three PGA Tour sponsors who are interested in either renegotiating or perhaps ending their contracts with the PGA Tour. The article is behind a wall so here are a few of the highlights: Jeld-Wen, a door and window manufacturer is trying to get out of its $9 million golf investment. The company sponsors a Champions Tour event and is also one of three sponsors of The Players which has a contract through 2012. Spain-based OHL, which owns Mayakoba and the Mayakoba Golf Classic, a PGA Tour stop in Mexico, reportedly wants out of its deal. That tournament runs opposite the Match Play and, much like the old Air Canada Championship, has never had a great many stars in the field. The company is two years into a six-year deal. Ginn, which has a contract through 2011, would also like out after this year. Its event runs this week. The company is hoping to also get out of sponsorships on both the Champions and LPGA tours. The article pointed out that these revelations come on top of the fact that the Tour has been unable to sell two $7 million sponsorships for the Presidents Cup as well as a title for the Fall Finish, valued at $3 million. As well, the article said the Tour had to incur some financial concessions to keep CA on board as title sponsor of the World Golf Championship event in Miami. These developments, of course, could just be the tip of the iceberg. The talk of a merger between Chrysler and GM could have ramifications on the three events those two companies sponsor, and so far, there’s no word on what’s happening with the Merrill Lynch or Wachovia events in terms of a name for the sponsor.
