SAM TORRANCE has stunned the golfing world by striding into today’s semi-finals of the World Match Play Championships at Wentworth but the laconic Scot’s gripping fightback for a final hole victory over World No 5 Vijay Singh yesterday didn’t unduly surprise himself. Though Torrance has tumbled to 1,187th place in the world rankings this season, making only three cuts in the wake of last year’s slide down to 87th in the European Order of Merit, he insists that his form has been good. Instead, he attributes his recent run of poor results to the pressures of the European Ryder Cup captaincy, saying: “My form’s never really been away, to be truthful. I’ve been striking the ball pretty good every time I played. “I don’t want to be blasé about this but I haven’t had any motivation this year with the Ryder Cup and meeting you chaps (the media) every week. I was going through the motions but now it’s been postponed, I’ve got a year to play and I am concentrating a lot harder this week.” Torrance was having his breakfast at nearby Sunningdale golf club when he received Tuesday’s summons to Wentworth as a last ditch replacement for Canadian Mike Weir. Originally intending to follow the event on TV and place a bet or two on the matches, he has instead hit the jackpot on the golf course, cashing-in to the tune of £85,000 sterling for beating Seve Ballesteros and Singh on his way to today’s semi-finals. Few would back Torrance to beat Dubliner Pádraig Harrington today but his doughty fightback against Singh suggests that the Scot is not a man to be trifled with. Torrance may have taken the first after Singh bogeyed one but he was not to get his nose in front again until the 35th, when his third birdie in four holes put him in front on the final tee and the Scotsman’s steely nerve held strong as he completed an impressive tally of 63 for the second 18. Only Lee Westwood of the other seven quarter-finalists managed to make hay that spectacularly as the sun shone down on Wentworth, also beating par by nine strokes on his second circuit as he ground out a one hole win over Thomas Bjorn on this long and exacting course. If Torrance refuses to look beyond today’s semi-finals with Harrington, he conceded that the thought of a final showdown with Ian Woosnam, his Ryder Cup vice-captain and close friend, had crossed his mind on the eighteenth green. “That captain and the vice-captain in the final. Unbelievable. It would be great but I only have tomorrow in my eyes now.” Woosnam confessed that he was a little surprised to make it this far. “I must admit I did not play very well this afternoon and I’m very fortunate to win 4 and 3 against Colin (Montgomerie). I know he was three down after 18, but we both did not play very well in the afternoo, somewhere around level par, and that was not very good golf.” The Welshman needed only to play steadily as Montgomerie struggled with his short game and fell out so badly with his new putter that he asked his wife, Eimear, to dash home and fetch another for him at lunchtime. It brought little relief and as the afternoon progressed, Montgomerie’s noble efforts to maintain his new persona as a beaming source of bonhomie on-course this season came under irresistible threat and the old Monty peered out at us from a grim and crumpled visage. What a cruel, mind-bending game this can be! MP 59 R11 MP 69 This article is from http://www.decembergolf.com/ More Golf Clubs Age at http://www.decembergolf.com/ X-24 RAZR X 712 AP2
