It is so exciting that ski resorts will be back up and running this year, even if not at full capacity. For those of us who live for our winter holiday, the prospect of heading off to the slopes is a very welcome one. Here’s what this charming village high in the Three Valleys has to offer when it comes to fun on the pistes. Beginners If you’re new to the winter sports scene or just need to get your confidence back after a couple of years off, rest assured that you will be right at home here. From your self catered or catered chalet, Val Thorens has plenty of beginner options right on the doorstep. The high altitude location means that the resort is blessed with a long season and excellent snow conditions. The nursery slopes are always closer to the resort and lower down, which can be an issue in some resorts later in the season, but not here. In recent years a vast amount of cash was spent on catering for beginners and a 40-hectare area was created for newbies. There is also the option to buy a special lift pass at a reduced rate. This pass only includes nine lifts, which is all you need when you are just starting out. It will save you a fortune on a lift pass that covers a huge area that you might never make use of. Intermediate With 200 blue and red runs, any intermediate level skier or boarder will be well accommodated. Every morning after a delicious breakfast in your catered chalet, Val Thorens and the other two valleys in the Three Valleys await, with 600km of slopes screaming to be explored. The area is well serviced with 180 lifts and there is more than 1900m of vertical between the resort and the top of the highest lift. Runs weave down the mountains, with the longest taking in a whopping 12km. You can choose a lift pass that covers all three of the valleys or just take the Val Thorens pass, which will save a few pennies but still offer the intermediate lots of scope. Advanced Seasoned skiers and boarders will not be disappointed with a week here. There are eight exciting black runs in Val Thorens alone and 32 in the total Three Valleys. Off-piste opportunities abound and the snow quality on the glacier and north facing slopes is the best you’ll get in any French location. If you are a really confident skier, hire a ski guide and head to the Maurienne flank on the backside of the resort; this experience will make your holiday! Snowboarding For boarders staying in a hotel, self-catered or catered chalet, Val Thorens does not disappoint. The snow park on the Plateau sector is very accessible and with five zones that accommodate all abilities, this huge mountain playground is a haven for adrenaline junkies.
