For anyone looking to stay in France’s Three Valleys in a catered chalet, Val Thorens is a resort you should definitely consider. The highest of the three valleys that make up the area, this resort has guaranteed snow conditions with plenty of excellent accommodation choices too (from hotels to a catered chalet). Val Thorens is also famous for having a varied range of slopes and, despite the many convenient links to Meribel and Courchevel, it has plenty of scope for a full day skiing all on its own. Here we have picked out our top five pistes in Val Thorens. The Top Five Blue Piste Plein Sud Despite coming first on the list, this is a piste that is fitting for an end of the day run, mainly because the Plein Sud lift to the top passes over the famous après ski bar, La Folie Douce. This funky party spot makes the perfect stop off point on your final run of the day. Unclip your skis, grab a drink, get down and boogie to the live music and join the dancing (which can often get quite crazy). Après ski at La Folie Douce really is a rite of passage! Blue Pistes Dalles A great cruising piste, this one is lovely and wide, sweeping down through spectacular scenery with wonderful surrounding views. It is a slope that is a nice one to start with if you and your group haven't skied in a while and you’re looking to get the ski legs back in action. Leading all the way back to the centre of town, it is a useful one to know about if you have left something at your catered chalet! Val Thorens has plenty of ‘ski in, ski out’ chalets so if getting right back to your accommodation at the end of the day is important make sure you look at options that offer this. Red Piste Christine Another gorgeous long and winding run that leads from the Peclet gondola, this one is a little more challenging but worth the effort. Fabulous views abound and it leads to the Moraine and Col chairlifts that take you up to 3000m and even more awesome panoramas. It can be cold to ski down from here so pick a sunny day! Red Piste Col and Blue Piste Genepi A day on the slopes isn’t quite complete unless it involves a delicious hot chocolate and the charming Caribou restaurant with its open fires is a favourite spot to indulge. To get here, you need to take the Moraine chairlift and ski down the Genepi run. Half way down is your hot chocolate heaven - it can’t be recommended enough! This run also passes Bar 360, so if you’re heading down the Genepi later in the day, grab a beer here to kick off your après ski. Red Piste Bouchet If you like an early start, this one's for you. Aim for the Orelle lift and keep an eye out for the Peyron ski lift that links to Bouchet. At the top you can join the adrenaline junkies zip lining across the mountain at speeds of up to 105km an hour, should you wish. This is definitely not for the faint hearted, so if you don’t fancy it, it also makes for great entertainment as a spectator. Skiing down the Bouchet is a lovely start to your day too.
