Nestled in the Savoie region adjacent to Val d’Isere, the five villages of Tignes comprise one of the finest ski destinations anywhere in the Alps. Tignes is renowned for its ski runs, and here are our top five: Sache For those looking for a real challenge, Sache will accommodate. It’s one of the longest black runs in Europe and comes highly recommended for avid skiers who are looking to test their fortitude and stamina on the slopes. It is the type of run that many find themselves taking a break halfway through! Gully Piste A nice relaxing blue route, the piste that takes you to the Laisinant chairlift is an enjoyable run with a nice gentle slope and great views. It’s a good place to head with children or inexperienced skiers before tackling some of the harder routes. Depending where you’re staying, it may be accessible from your catered chalet. Tignes has several gentle blue routes, but this is one of our favourites. Cyclamen It wouldn’t be an article on Tignes without mentioning the fantastic ‘Eye of the Needle’ rock formation. The Cyclamen slope takes you right past the large circular oddity and provides some of the best powder anywhere in the area. Whizzing past the Eye on a clear day on the freshest snow in the Alps can be a truly transformative experience – and one that makes this slope a must. Glacier It’s a famous route, and for good reason. You’ll likely be able to see the summit of Glacier from your catered chalet; Tignes provides some good red routes, but none like this. With an altitude of over 3600 metres, the snow is fresh and powdery and, as the highest peak in the area, you’ll get amazing views from the cable car. Palafour A good place for a warm up or a warm down, Palafour is a blue route that heads down to Le Lac. It’s a smart idea to get your legs in order before tackling something like Sache and this is a good place to do so. You can also take a sled and slide down the chairlift route! Why Wait? But it’s not only about the fantastic runs: food and drink in the area is top-notch, the apres-ski is out of this world, and there are excellent choices for a catered chalet. Tignes also provides world-class freestyle and off-piste skiing for those looking for something a bit different.
