In 1943, Dr. Leo Kanner published the first clinical account describing children and a distinct syndrome which was unlike other psychiatric disorders previously documented. Kanner chose the term “infantile autism” in his observation-based report to describe the features of autism that are still in use today. Kanner’s “autism” label has evolved into a newer term that more accurately illustrates a wide range of autistic conditions, called autism spectrum disorder, or ASD. Treatment techniques for ASD children have also evolved as a result of scientific and behavioral studies, and are increasingly available in local communities.
