If you want to take advantage of cheap airplane tickets or cheap vacation packages for travel over the upcoming holidays, smart money suggests that you buy now. The upcoming holiday season is expected to see higher priced airfares than in recent years. The recent multiple airline mergers and American Airlines’ financial woes have resulted in most airlines reducing their flight schedules. There will be about 20 percent fewer flights in November and December of this year compared to 2008. Reducing flight capacity has empowered airlines to increase prices. Savvy travelers should not wait to purchase airline tickets for travel over the holidays because of hoped for late holiday sales. Starting in November experts expect each day a traveler waits to purchase airline tickets for holiday travel to cost an additional $5 on average. Procrastinators will do better if planning to purchase international airline tickets whose prices are usually low for the holidays and have a reasonable chance of seeing last minute sales. If your traveling party is willing and able to fly on separate planes to save money, you should purchase a single ticket at a time when buying airline tickets online. Given that there are a limited number of cheap seats, you will only be shown higher priced seats if you request more tickets than available at the cheapest price. By purchasing a single ticket at a time you can sometimes save on one or more tickets.
