Traveling with youngsters over an extended period of time requires more than simply the purchase of cheap airplane tickets and discount hotel rooms. This is particularly true if the vacation destination will be new to everyone traveling. Parents need to be ready to deal with the unexpected. Extra patience and a sense of humor are musts on any trip with little ones. Humor can defuse many a stressful situation. The following are tips that help make a family vacation a success: • Explain to your children what to expect going through airport security including the removal of shoes and all jackets. If more than one child is traveling, decide in advance which parent will assist which child. • Pack healthy snacks. You do not want your little ones to be eating candy prior to flying since sugar can increase a child’s nervousness, irritability, and disrupt sleep routines. • Allow enough time for a couple of bathroom visits prior to boarding. • Bring activities to kill time. Tablets and coloring books can prove to provide useful distractions. • When boarding, encourage your children to find their own seats. • Stress the importance of keeping their seatbelts buckled. • If this is your child’s first flight, describe how taking off will feel before boarding and explain about how sometime flights hit turbulence. • Try to stay at a hotel that offers free Continental breakfast. This saves money and time and takes pressure off having to find a restaurant each morning. • Find a local grocery store so that you can purchase your child’s familiar snacks for day trips and the hotel room. • Map out where you will be going ahead of time.
