With the aim of providing ‘something for everyone to laugh at’, the New Zealand International Comedy Festival held simultaneously in Auckland and Wellington, is hosted in several informal settings around the towns. Its broad appeal has translated into consistently high attendance since its inception in 1993 with its side splitting brand of comedy. The festival opening is always a gala hosted by famous comedians with wide television coverage and featuring well known New Zealand and international comedic talent. Events to encourage budding comedians are held alongside performances by professionals. The RAW rookie competition is one such event with the finals being held at the Classic Comedy Club in Auckland. The festival concludes with the Last Laugh where finalists compete for the Billy T and Fred comedy awards. Prizes are also awarded in such categories as the ‘best international comedian’, ‘local show’, ‘newcomer and marketing’ and ‘spirit of the festival’. Five comedians take to the road at the end of the events in Auckland and Wellington to take comedy to thirteen regional cities in New Zealand. The 2012 edition is scheduled to run from 27th April to 20th May featuring hundreds of home grown and international comedians in hundreds of shows including stand up, sketch performances, improvisation, theatre and children’s and musical comedy tackling a range of subjects just for a laugh. The festival is run by the New Zealand Comedy Trust set up in 1995 to manage the festival, to develop comedy as a performing art and to provide local audiences with access to the best of international and home-grown comedic talents.
