After independence this place was given the privilege of union territory. There was an important agreement signed by the government of India and the government of France in this regard. In the early democratic set up the first election of this union territory was held in Chandernagore, West Bengal. This was also a French colony during the 18th century. The Asrama built by the famous freedom fighter Rishi Aurobindo Ghosh has made this place famous.
