With the way the world has been changing over the last year & a half, it’s kinda nice to hear about places that haven’t changed a whole lot. Red River, New Mexico is one of these places. Chances are you may not have heard of this little Rocky Mountain haven, but once you get acquainted with it, you’ll want to visit as often as possible. |
The nutty thing about Red River is that there are other more popular destinations within earshot. Taos and Angel Fire have long stood the time as preeminent getaway spots for generations, especially for folks who love winter recreational activities like skiing. As it turns out, Red River, New Mexico has been busy doing their thing quietly nearby, steadily making a name for itself as one of the best places to visit anywhere in the United States.
And it’s not just winter sports & recreations that make Red River amazing. Therein lies what make this town so different from more popular neighboring areas: they’ve got stuff going on all year long. Sure, there’s a busy winter season, but you can visit anytime of year and still find plenty to do. Most ski resort/winter destinations can’t say the same. What’s more, Red River is also a short drive away from some absolutely sweet day-trips that are historical, educational, and just plain fun. What’s more, after a day of galavanting, you have the quaint awesomeness of Red River to look forward to when you return.
If you’re thinking that Red River, New Mexico might be worth a look sometime soon, here are a few things to know before you book:
Weather Is Amazing - Of course you can expect cold temperatures during the winter months. As Lloyd Christmas once emphatically said, “Yeah. We’re in the Rockies.” However, temperatures during the rest of the year are actually tremendous, with summer days in the 70s. Sip coffee in the morning & relish the nice nip in the air as you look around & see nothing but nature. Sounds nice, huh?
Blending In - The best way to enjoy Red River is to hang out with the residents. Blend in with everyone. Residents are friendly and will point you in the direction of the best places to eat & hang out in town. Walk around with the town folk & see Red River the way it was meant to be seen.
All Killer, No Filler - Remember the whole ‘there’s plenty to do all year’ thing? We’re talking festivals, concerts, parades, a burgeoning arts scene, community gatherings, and just about anything else you can think of. An itinerary is a must for any trip just to keep things on track, but for a town as rich with stuff to do as Red River, just looking at a local calendar of events may be enough.
Everything In One Place - You know how you travel & sometimes have to venture out of your way to find stuff? Not in Red River. You’ve got everything you could want within the city limits. Fine dining? Check. Spas, yoga, and general recreation? Check? Boutique retail therapy as well as knick-knack kitschiness? Double-check!
Probably the one thing that is an essential part of any trip to Red River, New Mexico is keeping it simple. It’s no surprise that the last sixteen months have been brutal. We’ve made sacrifices & dealt with downturns that have hit too close to home. Sometimes being able to simply ‘be’ somewhere beautiful where the air and people are nice is all you really need. You could go ape on the off-roading, hiking/biking, and fishing, but you could also sit back & just take in nature. Red River, New Mexico has been an oasis for generations for a reason.
