Considering EVERYTHING that we’ve all collectively been through for the last nearly two years, be honest — how many of you are actively thinking about visiting a mountain town this fall? Chances are that not many people had their hand up, but don’t feel bad. In truth, just about everyone has been through the wringer, so being jazzed about heading to the mountains for a fun fall season just doesn’t seem like a thing to do. But maybe it should be. For eighteen months, we’ve been told time & time again to be mindful of those around us & to be more aware of our surroundings. As such, we stayed home, turning our humble abodes into schoolrooms, offices, gyms, and just about everything else you can think of. Soon enough, we started going outside. Turns out, we liked it. Like, LIKED it A LOT! We got back into gardening, did some cool DIY projects to improve out homes, and even got back to basics by playing with the kids in the front yard again. Some of us went further, venturing to local state & national parks to get back to nature. Not only was it usually free, but you could do all the cool outdoorsy stuff you loved AND keep your distance from everyone else. It was the best of all the worlds, and it was nice. Soon enough, though, there seemed to be a bit of a lifeline thrown our way regarding the current crisis, and things started getting back to normal. At least, that’s how it started to feel. Turns out that may have been a bit of an oversimplification. So, here we stand, not sure where things will be going but still sure that we want to get back into the world again. Enter the mountain town. While many folks might think of mountain towns as little rural places that are tucked away from all of civilization, it turns out that these little havens have been a part of our collective history since, well, ever. In fact, the history of the United States’ westward expansion is all about the rise & development of mountain towns. Still, there is likely a big number of people out there who might not be quite ready to go all in on a mountain town. Plus, traveling in the fall isn’t the most glamorous especially when compared to summer. Right? Actually, per travel industry insiders, fall travel has been on the rise for the last few years, with many choosing to push their venturing into less busy times of year to avoid crowds & save money compared to the spring & summer. And close to the top of destinations? You guessed it — mountain towns. If you’re thinking that you & your loved ones could use a bit of a break from everything that’s gone on in the last nearly two years, here’s a bit of what you can expect from a fall mountain town getaway: Skiing & Snowboarding - Sure, it may be a little early for some places to record snowfall enough for winter sports. But not all places are the same. If you dig these kinds of activities, it’s worth calling ahead & asking about conditions. You may be pleasantly surprised. Oktoberfest - Considered to be the quintessential festivity to welcome in the fall (aside from the pumpkin spice onslaught), Oktoberfest is a fun & quite family-friendly event that has a wide range of celebrations in mountain towns all over the U.S. Exercise - You may not think that exercise is something to do for fun, and truth be told, you’re right. However, it’s all in the way you look at exercise. Biking & hitting the hiking trails can be a truly exhilarating way to get your heart pumping, blood moving, and synapses snapping (that’s a thing, right?). Golfing - Did you know that research in fluid dynamics gives reasons why baseballs travel further in higher altitudes? Well, fluid dynamics is also the reason why golf balls are dimpled, making them able to do the same thing in general. Now, combine the two by golfing in a mountain town & what do you get? Having the greatest round of 18 of your life! Ultimately, though, visiting a mountain town at any time of year is about relaxing outdoors. Enjoy nature in all of its glory. But if that’s not enough, check out a nice spa, enjoy some meditative yoga, get a relaxing massage, or go really zen with some fishing. Make a mountain town getaway even more awesome with a stay at Lifts West in Red River.
