I was born in Kings County Brooklyn and lived in Manhattan and in the Bronx as a kid. I live in Florida now and I am a writer for Lynked.Info . For the purposes of understanding this article I have to tell you a little about New York so that you can understand the story I am about to share with you. New York has five boroughs and in no particular order they are: The Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Staten Island. The largest in size would be Queens, which is about 109 square miles and a population of about 2.3 million residents. Brooklyn is the second largest (about 72 square miles) and has a population of about 2.5 million residents. The third largest in mass is Staten Island which is about 58 square miles and has only about half a million people living there. Which brings me to the Bronx, which is about 42 square miles and has a population of about 1.3 million people and finally Manhattan; it’s about 23 square miles and has a population of 1.6 million residents. They say Manhattan is the city that never sleeps, that’s probably because they can’t find a bed to sleep on. Let me put this into perspective for Floridians and those who have visited Miami from all over the planet. Miami is about 35 square miles and has about 100,000 residents okay? Manhattan is 35% smaller than Miami and has 16 times more people. I grew up with wall-to-wall people. Social Networking was might not have been invented in NY but I am sure we have taken a big bite of that apple (pun intended). As a child living in the Bronx I remember cutting school one hot summer day, we had just moved to the Bronx and I made some new friends. We lived on Avenue St.John (between Fox and Beck street) and having lived in Manhattan I remember spending a lot of time in Central Park. For those of you who have lived or visited Manhattan you know Central park is a huge park. As I was saying, we were cutting school and we decided to go to the beach. We caught the number 2 train to Pelham Bay Park and I think we changed trains (to the number 6 train) and got off near Bruckner Boulevard. I knew my butt would be in a sling if I got caught, but the idea of meeting new people and the excitement of venturing off without my parents far out weighed the repercussions. The core of Pelham Bay is the portion west of I-95 and north of Middletown Road. It is part of the New York Metropolitan Area. It’s in Westchester County and ranks number two (number one being Manhattan) for wealthiest counties in New York State and twelfth wealthiest county nationally. FYI we were just some young kids who didn’t have a nickel between us. All I knew at the time was it was exciting and I remember thinking these kids are pretty kool. Pelham Bay Park is more than three times the size of Manhattan's Central Park; Pelham Bay Park is the City's largest park property. If you ever get a chance to visit the park you are sure to enjoy miles of bridle paths and hiking trails, Orchard Beach, the Bartow-Pell Mansion, two golf courses, and a breathtaking 13-mile saltwater shoreline that hugs Long Island Sound. We went to Orchard Beach and had a blast. There were tons of kids there from all over NY. We had fun. I have never forgotten that day. Its as if it happened yesterday and that was 40 years ago. People who know I write content for the Internet lynked.info & tipsforgrilling.info often ask me about Social Networking, and I remember being asked about it’s ramifications on society, as if I were a doctor or had the pulse on Social Networking. I guess (for those who know me) I've haven’t changed much. I still love to meet people and I have been networking all my life (who hasn’t). I have been on AOL since the mid 80’s. Like most people I ventured out and joined many groups online and met literally thousands of people online. At its zenith, AOL's membership was over 30 million members worldwide I was so fascinated by the whole thing I encouraged everyone I knew to sign up and participate in building networks. I remember calling my brother in amazement astonished at what we were doing. It was (to me) like walking on the moon. The information I was gleaming from the groups and friends and post just blew me away. It had a profound effect on me and shaped my thinking. Today kids take all of it for granted. It has been an adventure for me, and a very lucrative business for others. It’s like we knew we had a tiger by the tail and if they could just herd us like cattle they would make a fortune and they did. Good for them. For the rest of us I think we have all been enriched.
