Colors you should avoid wearing: Colors like pure white and pure black are generally avoided in a wedding as white is usually worn at funerals, and black signifies mourning. Weddings are celebratory events, and during such occasions bright colors are always welcome and they are considered auspicious at a joyous event. If you are a guest in the wedding, try not to wear bright red as this colour is traditionally reserved for the bride and of course, you wouldn’t want to outshine her. If your dress does not include a dupatta, carry a scarf or stole: There are a few ceremonies of different communities in which it is important to cover head. Like in a Sikh wedding, you usually need to cover your head when you are in the Gurudwara. So, carry a long scarf or a stole, which can also be used to cover bare shoulders or arms, if necessary. Men, usually, carry a handkerchief and they can use it for covering their head if they are in a Gurudwara to attend a wedding. Remove your shoes: Most religious places in India require you to remove your shoes. In such places, they ask you to keep them in the designated space before you enter the sanctified area. While at certain places, it is important to be barefooted, usually wearing socks or stockings is acceptable. Clicking pictures: If you are planning to take a few pictures, check everything beforehand. Usually it should be fine, but during some of the rituals, particularly, in a Hindu ceremony, even the official photographer is at times barred to avoid distracting with the flash of the camera. Prashad (Blessed food): During a Sikh wedding or even some Hindu ceremonies or weddings, you may be given blessed food called ‘karah prashad’, which is made with flour, sugar and ghee. You have to take it either from both the hands of from your right hand. What to gift: In Indian marriage, it is perfectly acceptable if you give a monetary gift (sagan). This is usually done by placing some money or vouchers with a card or a note into a pretty envelope, along with a note of best wishes to the couple. If you are planning to give a monetary gift, just keep in mind that numbers that end with numerical one are considered lucky, for instance, Rs.101, Rs.501, and so on. Food: If the wedding ceremony is at a Hindu or Sikh temple, you will be served with only vegetarian food. Don’t worry! In other wedding celebrations like the mehndi or sangeet, non-vegetarian is served depending in the family preferences. But in Jain weddings, non-vegetarian food is strictly prohibited and the food is strictly vegetarian. In Muslim weddings, you get scrumptious non-vegetarian food but you can expect the meat to be halal. There are sure to be vegetarian options as well. The best thing to do is to accept only what you can eat and it would be rude to eat nothing at all. Greeting the bride: In Indian wedding ceremonies, it is not generally a custom for male guests to kiss or dance with the bride. Even if the bride belongs to the most liberal family, she will prefer following the custom of being demure on her wedding day and it’s best to respect tradition on this. Have good fun and enjoy the overall experience! Everyone knows that you are not aware of the traditions and culture, so don’t worry much about offending anyone’s sentiments. No one will hold anything against you! They'll be delighted that you attended and will treat you like a welcome guest or even family.
