Those who are opening a dollar store often forget it is the small things that can make a big difference in the final results they achieve. For example, they don’t spend a lot of time considering how to display dollar store merchandise to maximize sales. Don’t allow yourself to fall into this trap. Take the time to not only consider the right things to do, but also to make them happen. In this article I provide 5 simple rules to help get you started toward success when setting up your store. Rule #1) Peg hooks need to be installed to maximize both appearance and sales. When opening a dollar store be sure to install them in even rows from top to bottom on the pegboard or slot board. Remember; your customer scans from side to side, so placing merchandise in rows from top to bottom accommodates customers no matter what their height. Rule #2) All like dollar store merchandise should be stocked together. No matter whether you are using shelves or peg hooks, be sure to keep items together. Running two rows of the same item top to bottom makes rearranging the display easy. It also allows customers to more easily spot items. Rule #3) When installing shelves always use the same depth of shelf. If you are running shelves from one end of an aisle to the other, keep the depth the same. If you are running them top to bottom, try to do the same thing. If that isn’t possible, then run the least-deep shelves at the top and work your way to the deepest at the bottom. The exception to this rule is end caps where it is often best to deliberately place a less deep shelf at the top and then matched depth longer shelves for the balance of the end cap. Rule #4) Merchandise placed on shelves should also generally be placed in even rows from top to bottom. While there are some exceptions to this rule, it works well for most products, especially those items you have purchased in higher quantities. Rule #5) Signage is best placed at eye level for the average shopper. Place signs at about 5 feet high to have the most impact. Since smaller signs are 6-8 inches tall, you are accommodating shoppers from under 5 feet to almost 6 feet by placing easy to spot signs at about eye level. If you are opening a dollar store these simple guidelines are a great place to start your merchandise stocking efforts. Once your store is open and operating you can test other variations to see how to maximize the sales of the dollar store merchandise in your store. To your success when opening a dollar store!
